Inspector Gary promptly returned to Philadelphia and reported the new revelation to the officers of the company.

He received a reaction he did not expect.

'It's a fake,' stated Smith. 'A tale manufactured by a wily criminal for selfish purposes.'

Though Gary argued his case, they refused to believe it or attach any importance to it. He had one last try.

'But there are certain details in Hedgepeth's statement that point to at least some of it being true as it could have only come from Howe or Howard, who is most certainly an alias of H. H. Holmes. For instance, Hedgepeth states that the premium on the policy was sent by a telegram from New York, as indeed it was. I checked, and it was sent on the very day it was due, August 9th. How could Hedgepeth have known that fact?'

Realising this fact was known only to the officers of the company and the conspirators, Smith finally concluded that the matter merited further investigation.

'Okay, Gary, you win. Make some enquiries and report your findings to me.

Gary was meticulous in his re-examination of the case and soon turned up evidence that, as he suspected, the company was the victim of a clever fraud.

The aid of the Pinkerton Detective force was now secured and a countrywide search was made for H. H. Holmes.
